Don’t Believe the Hype: Affirmations for a Tuesday
June 30, 2015
You are enough. Totally and thoroughly enough. With your pieces and parts that you want to fix, your unfinished projects, your uncertain plans for the day, the week, the life. Know it or not, you bring something to the table just as you are.
Not doing #allthethings does not make you “lazy.” If you start using this label with yourself and you are not in a tube, floating down a lazy river, make a note and take this opportunity to do a motivation assessment. Try to gauge how much you want to do X by running through three things: At this point in your day/week/life how much do you desire to do X? How ready are you to do X? How willing are you to do all the steps involved with X? If you don’t do X what is the real consequence to you?If you do X, what will be the real benefit?Try to be honest with your responses and be OK with whatever you learn.
Adulthood is not about having it all together it’s about knowing that “having it all together” is a sneaky, sneaky lie because you will have times in your 20’s, 30’s, 40’s, 80’s where you start to grow again. Sometimes, this will feel like you’re mentally learning to walk all over again. Go gently, be kind, and find a solid place to steady yourself.
Change (grand or subtle) is great and life-giving. It’s also hard. The hardest. And the truth about change is that we are most passionately driven to it when we, as individuals or in relationship, literally cannot survive with the way things are any longer. Most of the time, it is not about “wanting it badly enough” or “being strong enough.” Let’s get real and save ourselves some time, energy, and shame. And speaking of shame…
Those shaming, self-deprecating thoughts on loop in your head? The ones you’ve known for a while now? The one’s that seem really, really real? Don’t believe the hype. They may not be the whole truth. They may not even be half true. (GASP!!) They just might be sneaky, sneaky lies!!
And as always, one foot in front of the other. We are living in a world trying to get us to design our best life (like the whole thing!), which is a fantastic idea. Lots of promise there. However, we can sometimes get so overwhelmed with the BIG LIFE PLAN thing that we’re frozen in the now. Read and repeat after me:
