Breaking the stigma surrounding mental illnesses is a crucial step in creating an open-dialogue about these issues. When it comes to mental illnesses people are reluctant to get help. On the other hand, people seek help for physical illnesses without a second thought. Why does this happen? Why do people speak openly about their diabetes and back pain, but are so willing to put their anxiety and depression on the back burner? Two words. Social. Stigma.
Fifteen year old Yvana, a 10th grader, grade A student, and all around “regular teen,” suffered from depression and anxiety. Not understanding what was going on, Yvana was confused, tired, and hopeless. After getting help Yvana began to understand her mental illness. In efforts to spread the word about the importance of breaking the stigma of mental illness, Yvana made this video.
